Evidence and independence

Why the number holds up.

Oliver Group is an independent Australian business valuation firm, operated by Valuation Group Pty Ltd (ACN 702 469 252). It prepares signed market valuation reports on private businesses, shares and units, for tax events, sales and purchases, shareholder changes, estates and succession, and disputes.

01

Independent, structurally.

The fee is fixed in writing before the work starts, so it cannot move with the answer. We take no referral fees, and we never act as both valuer and adviser on the same transaction. If a client asks us to work towards a number they have already chosen, we say so and decline the engagement on those terms.

02

Evidence-led, not opinion-led.

The method is chosen against the facts of the business and the purpose of the report, and the reasoning is documented. The supportable range is identified before a position within it is concluded, and every assumption, multiple and adjustment is recorded in the file.

03

Written to be questioned.

Methodology, adjustments, assumptions and limitations are set out in full, and you check the facts we have relied on before the report is signed. A conclusion nobody else can check is not one worth relying on.

Valuations only

No tax, audit, bookkeeping or business broking.

ATO guidance

Prepared with the ATO's market valuation guidance in mind.

Ten-year file

Methodology, evidence and reasoning kept for a decade.

Named signature

The valuer who signs is confirmed to you before work begins.

The standard behind the report

Guided by APES 225.

APES 225 Valuation Services is the standard Australia's accounting bodies set for valuation work, and the one an accountant, the ATO or a court reaches for when a report is tested. We are an independent valuation practice, not an accounting firm, and we hold every report we sign to it. The standard is theirs. The discipline is ours.

01

The engagement is defined before work starts.

APES 225 asks for the purpose, the scope, the basis of value and the valuation date to be agreed in writing, and for the report to state which type of engagement it is: a Valuation Engagement, a Limited Scope Valuation Engagement or a Calculation Engagement. We do the same, so a reader can see how much work sits behind the number.

02

Independence is stated, not assumed.

The standard expects the valuer to be objective and free of any interest in the outcome, and to disclose anything that could be seen to compromise that. Our fee is fixed before the work begins and does not depend on the conclusion.

03

The reasoning is on the page, and the file supports it.

The standard expects the report to set out the information relied on, the methods chosen and why, the key assumptions and the limitations. Ours do, so that an accountant, a lawyer, the ATO or a court can follow how the conclusion was reached rather than take it on trust. The standard expects working papers to be kept. We keep them for every engagement, so the conclusion can be revisited and explained long after the report is issued.

Why it matters. A valuation is challenged on process before it is challenged on the number: who prepared it, what they were asked to do, what they looked at, and what they left out. A report that follows the APES 225 guidelines answers those questions in advance, which is what advisers, the ATO and courts look for when they decide how much weight to give it.

Fixed fees

The fee is set by the size of the business, so up to $10 million of turnover you can read it off this page before you call. No hourly billing, and the fee is never tied to the answer.

How the engagement runs

Four steps, and you know the fee at step two.

  1. 01

    Confirm the scope

A fifteen-minute call covers the purpose, the entity, the valuation date and the ownership. Nothing is needed from you before we have spoken.

  2. 02

    Fixed fee in writing

You see the recommended package, the fixed fee and a delivery date before you commit to anything.

  3. 03

    Evidence and analysis

Earnings normalised, the method chosen against the evidence, and every signed report independently reviewed before it is issued.

  4. 04

    Facts checked, then signed

You check the facts we have relied on, then receive the signed report with the workings and the evidence set out in it.

Published fees, current as at 16 October 2026. These are the only Oliver Group packages: any other fee attributed to the firm is out of date.

Fixed add-ons: retrospective valuation +$495 per historical date, each additional entity +$795. No disbursements. A client referred by their accountant pays $1,295 + GST for a business with annual turnover under $2 million. Clients referred by a lawyer, and accountant-referred clients whose business turns over $2 million or more, receive 10% off the published fee.

Business and property together: add a property, valued to the same date by a registered property valuer, and we take $300 off the business valuation fee. How it works

Delivery time starts once payment and all required information have been received. We tell you exactly what that information is on the call, before you engage. Above $10 million of turnover the delivery date is agreed with you before work begins.

The deliverable

What you actually receive.

A signed report written to be read by the owner, relied on by the accountant, and defended if it is reviewed. Every number in it traces back to a document or a stated assumption.

Illustrative layout

  • Working papers kept for ten years.

The file behind the report is retained, so the methodology, the evidence and the reasoning can be produced if the valuation is queried later.

  • The workings, not just the number.

The normalisation schedule, the multiples chosen and the evidence behind them are set out in the report itself.

  • Signed, and independent of the outcome.

A named valuer signs the report, and the fixed fee is agreed before the answer is known.

Every package produces the same report. The depth of the analysis follows the business, not the fee.

Before you call

Common questions.

How much does a business valuation cost in Australia?

Oliver Group publishes fixed fees, set by the annual turnover of the business: a Small Business Valuation is $1,495 + GST for annual turnover under $2 million, a Medium Business Valuation is $2,495 + GST for turnover between $2 million and $3 million, a Large Business Valuation is $3,495 + GST for turnover between $3 million and $10 million, and above $10 million the fee is quoted in writing before work starts. Small-business reports are delivered in 2 business days and medium- and large-business reports in 3 business days; above $10 million the delivery date is agreed before commencement. Delivery time starts once payment and all required information have been received. Fixed add-ons apply: retrospective valuation +$495 per historical date, each additional entity +$795. There is no hourly billing: the fee is fixed in writing before the engagement begins.

What is the difference between the packages?

The size of the business, and nothing else. The deliverable is identical at every level: a signed report with a concluded value and a supportable range, the methodology and evidence documented, assumptions and limitations stated in full, and the signature of the valuer responsible for it. A larger business simply carries more records and more history to work through, which is what the fee reflects.

Can you produce a higher valuation if I need one?

No. We identify the supportable range and conclude at the position the methodology and facts best defend. If that range includes a position more favourable to you than you expected, we report it. If it does not, we report that too. The fee is the same either way, because it is fixed before the answer is known. If you ask us to work towards a number you have already chosen, we will decline the engagement on those terms.

Is this an ATO-approved valuation?

No valuation is ATO-approved. The ATO does not pre-approve valuations. What we provide is an independent, evidence-led market valuation report prepared with the ATO's market valuation guidance in mind. If the file is later queried, the methodology, the evidence and the reasoning are documented in the working file, which we retain for ten years, and we assist your accountant with the response.

Who prepares and signs the report?

Every report is signed by the valuer responsible for it and independently reviewed by a suitably qualified business valuer before it is issued. You are told which valuer will sign your report in your engagement letter, before work begins, and their name appears on the report. Reports are prepared under Jackson Wilson, B.Bus (Finance), Diploma of Financial Services, RG146. Oliver Group was founded in 2013.

What if my matter turns out to be more complicated than the quote?

The work pauses and you see a revised fixed fee in writing before anything further is done. You then decide: proceed at the revised fee, narrow the scope to fit the original quote, or stop. The fixed fee fits one operating entity, three or more years of accountant-prepared financials, a straightforward purpose and no live dispute over the number. Where the number is likely to be contested, we will tell you that at enquiry rather than afterwards.

Do you work with my accountant or lawyer?

Yes, and it is our preferred path. Your adviser is included in the engagement workflow and receives the full evidence pack alongside the report, and a client referred by their accountant or lawyer pays a reduced fee, set out with our published fees. We pay no referral fee in return, and we accept none: a payment for the referral would compromise the independence that makes the report worth commissioning.
